Teaching
Teaching is a strong passion of mine. My first goal as a teacher is to enhance students’ lives though sharing the love and joy of music, and I strive to help students build strong musicianship while developing executive skills on the piano. I have taught students of diverse age groups and levels; from beginning young children, advanced pre-college students, collegiate major and non-major students, to musicians learning piano as a secondary instrument, and adults. With students’ long-term goals in mind, I enjoy helping students to progress at their own desired and comfortable speed in each step of their growth while positively challenging them. Through rigorous teaching at the Eastman School of Music, Northwestern University, Eastman Community Music School and the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, I have gained comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experiences in teaching students both privately and in group piano class settings. In addition to teaching regularly at these institutions and summer camp, I have also taught solo piano masterclasses, music theory courses, piano seminar, piano ensemble, lecture and technique courses in topography of natural piano fingering, and appeared as a guest speaker at a high school music department and junior summer music camps. My teaching was recognized with the 2014-2015 Teaching Assistant Prize for Excellence in Teaching at Eastman.
In addition, my broader pedagogical skills further developed through my various positions as a vocal coach, collaborative pianist, and ballet and modern dance accompanist at SUNY Geneseo, Nazareth College, and the University of Rochester as well as my own artistic engagements in jazz, arranging, and compositions. I have extensive experiences performing and coaching instrumental and vocal performance repertoires as well as chamber music and music theater pieces. As an advocate of nurturing well-rounded musicianship for both my students and myself, I actively find ways to teach piano creatively and learn music in an engaging manner. My primary focus in piano teaching is to help build their fundamental keyboard executive skills, musicality, and performing skill, as well as non-musical skill such as effective practicing habit and self-discipline. But my ultimate teaching goal is to foster each student's creativity and artistry.
It is my goal to enrich students' lives through learning music on the piano. Through internalizing skills of performing piano, I hope students become empowered as a musician and a person of continual artistic growth. Whether students are at a very beginning level or advanced level preparing a career in music, I set a high standard of performance where students are guided thoroughly to reach their full potential. While I base my teaching on classical traditions, especially in students' formative phase, I am an active performer and an advocate of contemporary music including jazz, and I am open to exploring further genres with students. Depending on student's level and goals, my teaching will include, but are not limited to: learning diverse musical repertoires and styles, improving techniques and postures so that students are able to express music freely, sight-reading, performance practice, music theory, aural skills, and improvisation including jazz.
